Catching Up!

Catching Up!

SO it has been a couple of months since I have written a blog post.

First and foremost, we had our home broken into and the people who broke in stole all of my photography, computer, and recording gear, along with my back up hard drives and SD cards. In short, all of the material I had been recording for the past few months to upload was...gone. All of my photos...gone. My brand new camera...gone. Both of my computers...gone. Then the people stole all of my skincare, hair care and makeup. They ate our food, drank our drinks and then stole our dishes. They also stole my husbands' computer and backpack. There is more, but I won't bore you with too many details.

It was important for me to give myself some time so I could recover both professionally and personally. This is important for you to hear because it gives you permission to take time you might need to recover from events that may occur in your life. It is healthy, practical and wise. Since the break in, I have been able to complete two videos. The links will be posted below. I am thankful to have been able to repurchase most of my gear and am still working on backing up what I have. I hope to get the rest of my gear needed in the new year. But for now, I am slowly moving forward with videos and focusing on utilizing platforms that are easy and less time consuming, like Instagram and Facebook.

So here are a couple of things I want to cover today.

1. STRESS
Stress can greatly impact our posture and ability to practice being in correct posture. Did you know this? Repetitive stress or chronic stress re-patterns our muscles in a way that can increase postural discrepancies. Trauma can embed an unconscious muscular pattern that, if not dealt with consciously, can create a postural discrepancy. If there is physical pain associated with any of the above, it can add a complexity to muscular patterning and postural discrepancies that require a professional eye to help us re-pattern our muscles, constructively, and move toward balancing postural discrepancies. Does this make sense? How does stress affect YOUR body?

What does this all mean? It means that we need to be keenly aware of the stress in our life and how we physically respond to it so we can empower ourselves with the best care possible for our current and future well-being. I hear a lot of talk about self-love and yet I see so many people stressed and posturally disengaged. It is time to walk our talk and match our words with actions that improve our well-being on all levels. Make sure to leave me a comment about how you are best caring for your own well-being and posture by monitoring your stress levels. And definitely check out this new video.

You can check out the video on this topic here:

2. PROTECTION
Are you protecting your assets? I'm talking about your home and its contents, your computer, your photos and videos, your phone content. Do you have things backed up? Do you know how to properly back up your computer, photos and videos? What about your phone? Do you know that you can track your phone and your APPLE computer on your iPhone? Here are a few things I have learned.

* Backing up to the Cloud is a very good idea for documents and photos. (You can back up your phone to the Cloud and you can back up your phone to your computer and then to the external hard drives in the next point)
* If you have videos or music, backing up to "mirrored" external hard drives is the best option (as per the Apple Store manager I spoke to). But here is a link to another site that provides more options for backing up your important docs and photos More back up info
* If you do not have a home security system or a camera in your home, I would encourage you to do so. It is amazing to see what is going on around your home when you are not home. Here are a few options.

**NEST
(We have this hooked up to a camera security system and it works really well. It also connects to your home thermostat so you can turn on the heat or air before you get home and have a toasty or cool home to return to after work.)
(This is the home security, not hooked up to cameras. It is easy and we love it.)

If you have any suggestions you think would be a good addition to my list above, please leave those suggestions and links, if possible, in the comment section below. THANKS!

I will be writing another post soon. I'm working on my posture blog at another site and will add that link when it is up and running. I also have a few other things in the works as well, so stay tuned! Don't forget to follow me on Instagram (see the link below). I will also be doing a live FB chat with an anatomist coming up in a week, so if you are not on one of my FB groups below or following me on FB, you will want to jet over today. See you soon!

A Cup Of Thankfulness: A Bag of Peas

A Bag of Peas

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

~ Holistic Wellness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

Being thankful seems like such a small thing and yet some situations seem to so easily throw a wrench into my ability

to be thankful.

SO...as I sit writing with a bag of frozen peas on my neck, I am thankful for the numbing power of ice. HA!😀 I know it is temporary, but repeated, pain symptoms usually resolve sooner than later, and I do like efficiency. So ice and more ice is my current story and I'm gonna stick to it. Well and maybe some Biofreeze, acupressure, stretching, 3-Lock Mountain, and deep breathing. I have been working on my YouTube videos for counter-pain strategies and am praying that it is helpful to those who are experiencing chronic pain. What a blessing to take my unpleasant experiences with chronic pain and use it to help others. It brings meaning to a body response that doctors can find no use or purpose.

Speaking of which...as I consider the purposelessness of the "Gate" at the base of the skull that does not close with chronic pain, I am left to consider the other seemingly purposeless things that happen in life. For example, people who are born without arms and legs. Why would God let this happen? Doesn't He know that these children are bullied? Doesn't He know that it puts a tremendous burden on the parents, siblings and other people around them? How could anyone be thankful in such a situation?

And then there is Nick...

Nick Vujicic.

He is one of my go-to people for inspiration when I am exhausted from managing chronic pain.

He had to live 24 years before he found out that he was created with a purpose. It seems that his parents always knew he was created with a purpose and thankfully so...at least I am thankful he realized it. His story is amazing and I encourage you to watch his video...more than once or twice...and to share it with anyone who feels deeply discouraged, hopeless, purposeless or who wonders why God allows bad things to happen to good people.

So...what does this have to do with a bag of peas? Well, sometimes a bag of peas is not just for consuming. Sometimes a bag of peas is meant to be put on a sore neck to reduce inflammation. Or sometimes it is used to write about in a blog to help someone else use it to reduce pain in their body. Maybe its sole purpose is to remind someone that peas is a vegetable, hmm. Peas are sweet, delicious and green, :).

Sometimes the messy parts of our life have more purpose than just being a mess. We can use our mess or pain or illness, to become stronger, help someone else or just remind us that we are human and not a robot. We can also use our mess to learn from so we don't repeat it in the future. Be encouraged. You were created with a specific purpose in mind that will give meaning to your life if you act on it and wait patiently for God to work. Just like Nick did.

Do you have your own bag of frozen peas? What are you doing with the mess in your life? Is it going to be a time for growing and maturing or is it a time for stewing and brewing? I want to encourage you to take 20 minutes to stew. Stew hard for those 20 minutes and after the timer goes off, be done with it and take charge of your day the best you possibly can given your circumstances and resources. I started doing this exercise when I was thirteen and found it to be incredibly helpful. I know it won't be easy for a lot of you. But I want to encourage you to try. If you need to rest or take a 10-20 minute cat nap because you are exhausted, be thoughtful to do so. Your body and mind will recharge and thank you.

For my chronic pain sufferers, I will be coming out with more videos on additional counter-pain strategies, so make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel. They are all FREE. Pain causes our body to contract and tighten, which can create long-term postural discrepancies. We want to decrease our pain as much as possible, so make sure to implement as many counter-pain strategies as possible (that work for your body right now). You can check out my latest video HERE or go to the playlist HERE for my current counter-pain videos. Since I have been managing chronic pain for 40 years, successfully, I have a very long list of counter-pain strategies to share. If you have some of your own, definitely share those with me in the comment section below.

For my stress bunnies, remember that stress does not help us to maintain good postural habits. So I want to encourage you to build your counter-stress toolbox. Figure out what strategies work best to counter stress in your life so you can decrease feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, depression, anger, or overall feelings of confusion. I will be putting a list together soon to post, so stay tuned. If you have counter-stress strategies you find work really well, make sure to share those with me in the comment section below. I would love to hear about them.

Lastly, I would love to hear about the inspirational people in your life. Who do you go to for inspiration? Is it someone you know personally, someone from a story you read, a public figure? Let me know in the comments.

I hope you are able to find ways to be thankful in your day!

Happy Posturing (inside and out),

THE BEST Chronic Pain SOLUTION

THE BEST Chronic Pain SOLUTION

Ashley Osier aka The Posture Specialist

~ Holistic Wellness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

Chronic Pain is a subject that has been with me since I was a little girl. As I have grown and learned more about my body, health and wellness, and what doctors actually don't know, I am ever more grateful for understanding what chronic pain is and why it is so difficult to stop. In understanding chronic pain better, I can appreciate what doctors can do to help with chronic pain and then focus on what I need to do to fill in the gaps...which ends up being quite a lot.

In many of the pain management groups I'm in, I hear too many people crying out in fear and hopelessness over the chronic pain they experience and how little doctors can do for them. Pain medications are being taken away, people can only have so many injections before it becomes a health risk, and surgeries are not always successful. My heart is heavy for chronic pain sufferers. I understand that they want their life back, their body back, their ability to feel normal again...back. But for many chronic pain sufferers, normal takes on a whole new meaning, a new body, a new life.

So I created this video to help empower chronic pain sufferers and people who know and love someone who is a chronic pain sufferer. It is short and concise and begins opening the door to what I truly believe is the best chronic pain solution. I think many doctors would agree with me. Over the coming weeks and months, I will be creating more videos about what I call counter-pain strategies. There are many, so it will take some time.

You can watch today's new upload here:

I hope you enjoy this video. It comes from a deep desire to support, encourage and empower chronic pain sufferers. In managing my own chronic pain throughout the years, I have found one of my best counter-pain strategies, aside from corrective posture, is my attitude. When I have an attitude of gratitude I can look at the chronic pain that arises more realistically with joy and determination. I take my bag of counter-pain strategies, look to see who I can encourage, and face another day with hope and purpose.

Make it a great day! Happy Posturing!! (Don't forget to leave a comment!)

Time To Get Fall-Proof!

Time To Get Fall-Proof!

Ashley Osier aka The Posture Specialist
MA, HHE, CPS, CSMT, CAMT, CAYT, CWHP

~ Holistic Fitness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

Is it possible to be Fall-Proof? I believe we can work toward making sure we are preparing our body as best as is possible. Check out these statistics and then go to my new video on Fall-Proof Your Feet.

From Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov)

* One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury

*Each year, 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.

* Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.

*Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.

*More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways.

*Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.

*In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.

There are other figures, but these alone are staggering to contemplate. This does not include kids' sports or high-risk jobs. When falls cause broken bones, herniated discs, or head trauma, other complications occur, leaving people helpless, hopeless and dependent on a medical system that is often not able to meet their needs.

Conditions that make it more likely to fall include:

*Lower body weakness

*Difficulties with walking or balance

*Vision problems

*Foot pain or poor footwear

*Home hazards and dangers such as uneven steps or throw rugs

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT FALLS...

WATCH MY POSTURE VIDEOS! Poor posture impacts every part of the body, including the organ systems, the nerves and even how we think. Start working on your posture TODAY!

Here is the one I uploaded today

Fall-Proof Your Feet

ALSO...
The CDC encourages people to talk to their doctor to evaluate their fall risk, practice strength and balancing exercises, get their vision checked, and make their home safer. I will be doing a post on fall-proofing your home in the near future, so stay tuned!!

I have started an Official Series Playlist: Fall Prevention, which I will be building as time goes on. All of these YouTube videos are FREE, so make sure to SUBSCRIBE and click on the BELL to be notified of my next video. I also have an playlist for footcare and you can access that by clicking Footcare Video Series. It is imperative that we take better care of our feet to prevent falls in the future.

Hope to hear from you in my comment section below and on my videos!

Take care and make it a great posture day!

Posture: From the Feet Up

Posture: From the Feet Up

Ashley Osier aka The Posture Specialist

~ Holistic Fitness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

As I continue to learn how to better navigate my social media platforms, I want to encourage you to make comments at the bottom of this post and let me know how easy it is for you to find my links, find my comment section and then actually make comments.

Though this post is not about navigating my social media platforms, well maybe a little, it certainly does feel like I am starting this journey at the bottom and working my way up. Similarly, I am putting together my YouTube videos for my posture and pain management channel the same way.

All posture begins at the feet. Whether we have good posture habits or poor posture habits, it begins with the feet. It is important to make sure our feet and ankles are healthy, flexible and strong. If you haven't checked out my official foot series playlist on my YouTube channel, head over after finishing your read and commenting on this post and take a gander. There is a surprising amount of info to know about our feet and I have one more video coming that I will be sharing before I move on to the legs and knees.

You can find the link in my links section at the upper right area of this blog called "YouTube Posture and Pain Management Channel" or below my name at the bottom of this post. So start thinking about your feet. They are incredibly important. They go with you everywhere and are impacted by the shoes you wear, how you stand, how you walk and how you care for them.

Let me know what you are doing to take care of your feet. Do you know what the bottoms of your shoes have to do with how you distribute your body weight? You can find more info on that in my footcare series. All videos are free, holistic, and are backed with 20+ years of education, teaching, experience and professional practice.

Hope to hear from you in my comment section below!

Take care and make it a great posture day!

The Posture Specialist Live Chat Q & A

Ashley Osier aka The Posture Specialist

~ Holistic Wellness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

Join me!
I am going live tomorrow to talk about holistic strategies to counter pain. These are alternative approaches based on my education, work with clients and students for over 20 years, and my personal experience with managing chronic pain for over 40 years. I would love to chat with you about your thoughts!

If you want to join me live, you will need to go to this link...The Posture Specialist Live Chat...and join the group. This just gives you the ability to speak with me live, leave comments on the live thread during and after and participate in the group.

This is a fantastic way to address needs holistically in the moment. Holistic measures are not cures and I am not a doctor, but it is great to build up a repertoire of counter-pain strategies to start tackling your pain symptoms that may or may not be improved with surgery, medications, or injections.

Everyone is welcome...so let's chat!!

If you are not able to make it, but still want to respond with questions, you can leave comments on the thread as long as you are in the Q & A group.

See you tomorrow!!

Sharing My First Product Review

Sharing My First Product Review

Ashley Osier aka The Posture Specialist
MA, HHE, CPS, CSMT, CAMT, CAYT, CWHP

~ Holistic Wellness for Mind, Body, and Spirit ~

Gosh you guys...there are so many posts to write
and not enough time to write them!

I definitely want to take this opportunity to share my first product review. One of the things that has been on my heart is to review health-related products and approaches (including stretches and exercises) that we see on various platforms of social media. As a pain management specialist, I have had too many people come to me getting hurt from gym classes, yoga classes, physical therapy, massage therapy, and the like. Then there are numerous products we see on the market to take away pain or to improve our posture and some of them are just gimmicks and don't really work. As a Certified Posture Specialist, I want to make sure you are getting the best products to help correct and maintain good posture. As a chronic pain sufferer, I understand it is hard enough to manage life with the pain much less try and figure out which stretch and exercise won't hurt me and which products are worth the investment.

Part of my job will be to try out various products to see if they actually do work and if not to make sure to let you know.

This first product is exciting because I was able to find more uses for in addition to what the company proposes. I show a few examples of this in the video, which I have provided a link for below. I'm not going to get into the details because it is all in the video. But I personally have kept this product to use for myself. I sleep with it, sit on it constantly and sometimes stand on it when I am spending extra time on the computer at my standing desk. I would love to hear your feedback, so please make sure to leave a comment here or on the video.

To watch my first product review, click Product Review and enjoy!!

If you are interested in a particular product but want a more professional and educated take on it, please let me know and I will try it out, review it and post my video. I am also posting on this blog, my Instagram and my Facebook so I can support awareness for as many people as possible.

Please share this blog post and/or my videos with others
so they can benefit.

Postural awareness, awareness of our options for better wellness and pain management, and awareness of what to stay away from is really important for EVERYONE. It can save time, energy, and body aches/strains/injuries.

Thank you for participating in this movement!

For more blog posts on holistic fitness for the mind, body and spirit, make sure to follow this blog.  To get notified of my weekly YouTube videos, make sure to SUBSCRIBE and click the BELL (mobile phones make it more difficult to click the bell, so try your computer). You can always follow me on my other social media platforms below. I have a new Facebook site of my live posture Q&A broadcasts, which just started last week, so I will put that link below.

Stay tuned for more posts coming soon on all sorts of holistic fitness for the mind, body, and spirit.

Make it a great day! Happy Posturing!!
